Every year a different German city has the honor of hosting the national garden show. This year the task has fallen upon Heilbronn. Each city designs and sets-up a huge public garden with their hometown’s touch. Those gardens are laid out over several square kilometers and offer much more than just flowers. During the time the show is running, the city offers a huge entertainment program, featuring concerts, theatre plays and exhibitions. Weekly reoccurring events like water fountain shows, sport meet-ups and club meetings with hobby enthusiasts make for great opportunities to meet people and hang with locals.

The garden show is set up in many little sections, each with its own theme. There is a rose garden, a harbor garden, a campus garden and even a hall of flowers amongst the many gardens. Nestled in between are the many small, and the larger, open-air stages where the multitude of events are held.

Of course, you do not have to participate in any of the events; you can just pack up the family and enjoy a day out in the park with a pick-nick. There are plenty of places for the little ones to run and play and huge lawn areas for breaks and relaxation. Public lawn chairs and seats are set up throughout the gardens. The kids will love the different themed playgrounds, the water playground, or the huge climbing walls…

Due to the great location of the garden show, there is water all around you, as the Neckar River flows through the park. There are several restaurants, bistros and other stands to ensure that no visitor has to go hungry. The organizers and architects also payed close attention to the walkways and paths, keeping people with handicaps in mind.

The Gartenschau is open from April 17th until October 6th, 2019.

Firework madness!

Mark these special dates on your calendar: June 8 & 9, 2019! These days would be great for a day trip to the garden show as there is a firework special in the evening.

Germany may not be known for huge firework celebrations, like the 4th of July parties back in America, but to some folk’s surprise, Germany has some of the best pyro technicians in the world. And what better place to show off their skill sets, then an international two-day competition!

2019 is the second year, after the huge success last year, which the flaming stars festival will be hosted in Heilbronn. The tradition was founded 14 years ago when, for the very first time, Firework enthusiasts and professionals met up for a competition – the festival of the flaming stars was born. Since then the annual competition has grown to include the best pyro technicians from all over the world to meet up in Ostfildern, in the southeast corner of Stuttgart, and show of their trade.

The fireworks are not the only highlight of the weekend; the festival area is buzzing with entertainment starting in the early evening hours. Several stages will be engaging festival visitors with different live musicians like Party Souldiers & The nightLIVEband and, of course, live DJs; additionally to that, there will be hot air balloon rides and, in the evening, the balloon lighting. Furthermore, be sure to check out the fire shows, fire artists, drummers, the huge children’s program and much, much more happening at the Wertwiesenpark in Heilbronn.  Last but not least, do check out the many food stands and tents. They are not only there to entice that summer feeling, but also to take care of any culinary needs of their valued guests!
