Downtown Stuttgart, Marktplatz, Schillerplatz, Kirchstraße to be exact, is much like the season, transforming into something special. Over 125 booths and more than 30 open air restaurants are getting ready for the largest wine festival in the city. For 12 days Stuttgart will be celebrating wine and great food. Local specialties, sweets and over 250 different wines are there to represent the area. Be sure to try seasonal and regional delights like onion cake, German ravioli and new wine. People flock to the festival from all over Germany.
Early afternoons on weekends are perfect for strolling through the streets to check out all the different delicacies. Tables and benches make for cozy outdoor establishments to sit at, so be sure to enjoy the atmosphere and listen to some life music that is hosted by the local radio station. The streets and alley ways are decked out with fall foliage, flowers and lights. Sundays are family days with face painting, clowns, a mascot parade and lots of other fun activities. You can even win tickets for a hot air balloon ride.
Stuttgart's history has always been closely tied to its vineyards and the winegrowing industry. It was back in 1976 that the Pro Stuttgart Tourist Board decided to launch the Stuttgarter Weindorf to celebrate the winegrowing tradition. This traditional, annual festival is now considered one of the most attractive of the many "wine villages" festivals held in Germany every year.
